What is radiology?

Radiology is the branch of medicine that uses X-rays, ultrasound, magnetic resonance and radiopharmaceuticals to create images of the body. In other words, radiology is used to view what is happening in parts of the body that cannot otherwise be seen. The resulting images help doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury.

What is interventional radiology?

Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology that uses medical imaging to diagnose and guide the treatment of medical conditions via needle-puncture of the skin. Many interventional radiology treatments have eliminated or reduced the need for surgery.

Is radiology safe?

Examinations that require ionizing radiation, such as those involving X-rays, are performed at closely monitored levels that are considered to be safe based on years of rigorous testing. The use of ionizing radiation in children is a special concern that our radiologists address with stringent protocols to minimize radiation exposure while maintaining exam quality. Radiology procedures such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance (MR) do not involve the use of ionizing radiation and are also considered to be safe based on extensive research.

How qualified are radiologists?

A radiologist is a Doctor of Medicine who has completed college, medical school and a residency program in radiology. Our radiologists are all certified by the American Board of Radiology. Many have completed additional subspecialty training by participating in a fellowship program beyond their residency.

Who interprets my radiology results?

Many people assume that their doctor interprets the images created in a radiology exam. Typically, this is not the case. When your doctor orders a radiology exam, a radiologist interprets the images and provides a written report for your doctor, who then discusses the results with you. Since the report will likely influence the medical care you will receive, it’s important to have an experienced, board-certified radiologist interpret your medical images.

Cheyenne Radiology works with hospitals and physicians in two main ways. These include conducting the medical imaging exam/procedures in our Cheyenne office, or interpreting images that are sent to us electronically, often for practices in rural parts of Wyoming and Colorado.
